American Airlines will enter new European markets with the launch of more European routes during the summer of 2024 as part of a strategy to rebuild its transatlantic network from bases in Philadelphia and Dallas-Fort Worth, ensuring better use of its extensive network year-round. The body fleet, a project that will include another route with Spain.
Specifically, American will launch a new daily route between DFW and Barcelona, Spain, a city it currently flies to daily from Chicago O’Hare, Miami International, New York JFK and Philadelphia.
On the other hand, the new flights depart from Philadelphia International Airport with the French coastal city of Nice, starting from May 6; It is followed by Naples, Italy, from June 5, and Copenhagen, starting from June 6. The three cities are new destinations for the airline, which will work with them on new flights daily DreamlinerTo Naples by Boeing 787-8 and to Nice and Copenhagen by Boeing 787-9.
It will also restore flights between Chicago O’Hare International Airport and Venice, Italy, a route that stopped operating in October 2019.
In addition, Brian Znottens, senior vice president of scheduling and network planning at American Airlines, says the airline was interested in adding new destinations across the Atlantic during the summer of 2023, but uncertainties surrounding Boeing deliveries caused the airline to choose to increase frequencies over current tracks. But he adds that the capacity will be available next summer.
Znotins also says American has adapted its widebody strategy in recent years to achieve better year-round utilization. This includes using aircraft that typically operate long-haul routes in the South Pacific or South America during the winter months, such as DWF-Auckland, to combine with seasonal destinations across the Atlantic during the summer.
“We match those planes as well as we can so we don’t find ourselves flying a wide-body plane to Dubrovnik in the summer and then putting it on the domestic system in the winter, when it performs less than a narrow-body plane,” says Znotines. .
American currently offers 11 European routes out of Philadelphia, with European airports including Amsterdam Schiphol, Athens, London Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle and Zurich. About 42,100 weekly round-trip seats are available, according to OAG Tables Analyzer data, compared to 61,200 at this time in 2019, when the airline was serving 19 European destinations.
As of the summer of 2019, America has ended flights from Philadelphia to Berlin, Germany; Bologna, Italy; Budapest, Hungary; Dubrovnik, Croatia; Edinburgh, Scotland; Manchester, England; Prague, Czech Republic; Shannon, Ireland.
