(CNN Espanol) – Colombian businessman Alex Saab, who is considered the financier of President Nicolas Maduro in question, appeared before a federal judge in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida this Monday at his first hearing after being deported from Cape Verde.
Saab, who was wearing an orange jumpsuit, almost appeared at this initial hearing, in which he was accused of money laundering and overestimating contracts.
During the trial, Saab announced that Henry Bell, appointed by a U.S. judge, would be his lawyer. Bell asked to meet his client so he could discuss the charges he was facing.
Judge Saab denied bail and the next hearing is scheduled for Nov. 1.
Saab was handed over to the United States from Cape Verde on Saturday. He was arrested in Africa in June 2020 after Interpol issued a red notice for the crime in the United States.
