MIMI. Mexico and Venezuela retained the fifth and tenth places, respectively, while the Dominican Republic climbed one place to sixth in the World Baseball and Softball Federation (WBSC) world rankings, the organization announced.
The baseball world ranking measures the performance of national teams, from under-12s to professional, in international competitions endorsed by the WBSC over a four-year period. The new ranking even includes the results of the ball tournament in the Tokyo Olympics.
After winning the gold medal in Tokyo, Japan added 4,290 points to remain in first place among the 85 countries considered. South Korea, which ranked fourth in the Olympics, rose to second place. Taiwan (Chinese Taipei) dropped to third and the United States, the Olympic silver medalist, retained fourth place.
Mexico, which has lost all three of its matches in the Olympic Games, got 2,270 points to be the second best country on the continent and the first among Latin American nations. Mexico scored 38 points to finish sixth in Tokyo.
The bronze medal obtained in Tokyo added 240 points to the Dominican Republic, which now totals 2,063, valid for a climb to sixth place, equaling its best position in the ranking’s history.
In September 2017, the Dominican Republic was ranked 16th in the ranking, mainly due to its absence from the majority of lower level leagues that award points.
Venezuela, who last lost their last qualifier to stay outside Tokyo, remained in 10th place with 1,619 points. Cuba, which failed to advance to the Olympics for the first time, remained 11th.
Puerto Rico rose from 14 to 12, Panama remained 13th, Nicaragua fell from 12th to 14th, Colombia remained 15th, Brazil fell from 18th to 21st, while Argentina retained 25th place.
