Ukraine repels Russia's night attack with drones, missiles and fighter jets

(CNN) — It wasn't a quiet Christmas Eve in Ukraine, as the country's air force reported shooting down 28 Russian drones, two missiles and two fighter jets overnight.

Drone strikes took place in six regions of Ukraine: Odessa, Kherson and Mykolaiv in the south, Donetsk in the east, Kirovohrad in south-central Ukraine, and Khmelnytskyi in the west.

Ukraine says it destroyed a guided missile in the southern Zaporizhya region and an anti-aircraft missile from the Black Sea.

The General Staff of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Air Force noted that a Russian Su-24 fighter jet was destroyed in the eastern Donetsk region and a Su-30 SM aircraft was destroyed over the Black Sea.

In Donetsk, three people were injured, according to the Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office, when Russian armed forces bombed the cities of Osherytin and New York on the front line. Residential buildings in those areas were also destroyed.

In the southern Kherson region, one person was killed and two were injured, according to Oleksandr Prokudin, head of the regional military administration.

Prokudin said that his area witnessed 71 attacks the previous day, adding that Russian forces fired on residential areas.
