Colombia advances animal welfare in primary production – News

Species to be evaluated are: equids, pigs, sheep, goats, cattle, buffalo, backyard birds, and aquatic animals; In which the second chapter is included, which talks about assessing the welfare of backyard animals in Colombia.

In this context, the ICA works to promote animal welfare in primary production, considering that assessing the welfare conditions of animals of various economically important species in the country is of great importance.

In compliance with Article 4 of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Resolutions No. 136 and 253 of 2020, “A guide to animal welfare conditions for each type of production in the agricultural sector for species of horses, pigs, sheep, goats, cows, buffaloes, poultry and aquatic animals” already in force is adopted, which indicates This article states that the ICA will design and implement a methodology to assess animal welfare conditions containing measurable and evaluable indicators.

The construction of animal welfare assessment methodologies for the mentioned species responds to the basic principles of repeatability and ease and contains measurable indicators, which makes it possible to obtain an objective diagnosis regarding welfare.
