On Thursday, the UNICEF Supreme Council approved the new offer for postgraduate studies: a doctorate in social sciences. The degree adopts an interdisciplinary, cross-sectional approach to social studies.
The Faculty of Social Sciences of the National University of Buenos Aires Provincial Center culminates the celebrations of 35 years of its history with the creation of a new postgraduate degree: the Doctorate in Social Sciences.
The session was approved on 24 October by Resolution 240/23 of the FACSO Academic Council, and was approved unanimously on Thursday at the plenary session of the Supreme Council of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNICEN), which met at the Olavarria University Complex. The plenary session was attended by the Rector of the University, Dr. Marcelo Abba, the Vice-Rector of the University, Professor Alicia Spinello, and the Academic Secretary of the Master’s Presidency, Natalia Giamperardino, along with the deans of the academic units of the University.
In this context, the Dean of FACSO, Lt. Gabriella Gamberini, thanked the ad hoc committee that drafted the proposal and expressed: “This project demonstrates the sustainable growth of our teaching staff and is undoubtedly a great opportunity to undertake postgraduate studies and reflects the high training of our teaching staff to teach this profession.” New.
He also pointed out, in the context of 35 years of establishing the Faculty of Social Sciences and 40 years of the return to democracy, “the importance of continuing to support public university education, in order to create a profession that grants the highest academic degrees.” University.” Finally, he thanked every member of the academic community at FACSO and the University who made the completion of this project possible.
For his part, student advisor Facundo Ottaviano explained that this doctorate “will give a more comprehensive vision of our house of higher education, with more opportunities, with more professional development, with more openness and closeness to the community. We are excited to be able to receive people who want to Embarking on the postgraduate path at our college, but also to build a professional profile that emerges from our academic unit and goes out into the world to occupy spaces of collective construction and critical analysis of reality.”
The career project must be submitted to the CONEAU accreditation process for new professions after graduation as a prior step to obtaining a ministerial decision, so it is not expected to start before 2025.
Postgraduate proposal
The PhD in Social Sciences aims to promote critical reflection on the processes of production and research and understanding of the problems of the study of the social sciences. It is a graduate study proposal developed throughout the year through an ad hoc committee, approved by decision CA 077/23, composed of teachers, researchers and non-teachers from the Faculty of Social Sciences, and specialists in different fields and specializations. Related to social sciences.
This postgraduate degree provides an update on the different disciplines that make up the social sciences through their contemporary debates and those that delve into the analysis of topics that cross different theoretical frameworks. It also offers the possibility of including the thesis work in UNICEF research areas in relation to socio-cultural, socio-political and socio-historical problems.
The proposal aims to build an interdisciplinary dialogue, which considers the contributions of diverse theoretical and methodological perspectives and enriches the approach to solving problems of interest to the field of social sciences.
This degree is developed through a semi-structured study plan organized according to two axes: a core axis that includes compulsory co-curricular activities (two courses and two workshops) and an optional axis consisting of four courses. You will be required to complete other academic activities, such as participating in annual meetings called Research Advancements.
There is an initial offer of 27 courses, which can be expanded according to the career dynamics and profiles of PhD students.
The teaching staff consists of 33 doctors with a background in teaching and research, of whom 17 are professors from UNICEN and 13 of whom are from FACSO. Guest teachers will be added in the future. There are also thesis bank directors or co-directors.
The general aim of the PhD is to train doctors with an interdisciplinary perspective in research into social problems at local, regional, national and international levels, with the ability to: a) produce original knowledge of a theoretical, empirical and/or methodological nature in the field of social sciences doctoint3. b) Formulate, develop and evaluate multidisciplinary research projects and works. C) Forming research teams and human resources aimed at studying social problems. d) Contribute to modernizing teaching, based on different theoretical, analytical and methodological perspectives of the social sciences.
Joint and interdisciplinary work
Vice Dean Dr. María Luz Enderi coordinated the committee charged with writing the curriculum for the Doctorate in Social Sciences, consisting of Dr. Mónica Cohendos, Dr. Juan Pablo Mata, Dr. Constanza Cafarelli, and Drs. Anna Viscaino, Dr. Maria Vanessa Giacomasso, and TGU Marcos Rodriguez.
Since the beginning of the year, work has been done to develop the proposal in coordination with specialists from various universities and scientific and academic fields throughout the country. The proposal passed through different evaluation bodies such as the Academic Affairs Committee of FACSO, and the Postgraduate Advisory Committee (CAP) of the National University of Buenos Aires Provincial Center. In addition, there was collaboration with FACSO’s Virtual Socials, which worked with members of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (CEAD) Distance Education Committee to adapt the proposal to their requirements.
FACSO Vice Dean María Luz Endéré, who coordinated the ad hoc committee, highlighted the work of an interdisciplinary group of research teachers and a non-teaching specialist in CONEAU accreditation who formed it. He pointed out in this context that “work was very intense to meet the dates that had been set.” He also noted the participation of specialists who were consulted through in-person or online interviews, “all of which allowed for the development of a postgraduate proposal designed from an interdisciplinary perspective.”
The new postgraduate proposal from FACSO is added to the PhD in Archaeology, with almost 20 years of experience, a significant influence at national and Latin American level and which was classified as “A” this year, i.e. the highest category by CONEAU; The Master’s degree in Social Anthropology was established in 2015 and is currently being taught by the third batch. In this context, the new doctorate comes to cover a vacant space in our college and university.
