IRS warns of refund deadlines in US

Amid the crisis created by the coronavirus pandemic, the United States government used three economic impact payments, popularly known as stimulus checks, to target eligible individuals and families in 2020 and 2021.

Although most recipients have already received their stimulus checks, the IRS is calling those who are eligible for these benefits and have not yet received them, urging them to submit a recovery discount credit before the deadline.

The time frame for carrying out this process varies depending on the relevant financial year. Taxpayers must file a tax return by May 17, 2024, to receive stimulus checks through the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit. The payment deadline for 2021 is May 15. April 2025.

Importantly, those who are not legally required to file a tax return or have minimal income can claim the recovery rebate credit by filing a return.

In the US you can get a refund if you meet these requirements

The IRS establishes certain requirements to qualify for the recovery rebate credit. For 2020, you must be a US citizen or resident alien in the US. Not claimed as a dependent and has a valid social security number issued before the tax due date.

In the case of the 2021 recovery refund credit, you must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien, not claimed as a dependent by another taxpayer, and have a Social Security number issued before the tax filing deadline. Additionally, the credit may be claimed for a dependent with an SSN issued before the deadline or a dependent with an Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number (ATIN).

The IRS insists that the 2020 redemption rebate credit can be claimed for those who died in the same year, while the 2020 and 2021 credits can be claimed for those who died in 2021 or later.
