(CNN Spanish) – U.S. Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris on Friday reiterated some of the points she said she would try to strengthen border security while fixing the nation’s broken immigration system if she wins the November election.
“I will take further steps to close the border between ports of entry,” he said.
Harris spoke to supporters after meeting with Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials and Border Patrol agents during a campaign event in Douglas, Arizona.
During his speech, Haris said that if he wins the election, his government will bar entry to the country for five years to those detained for attempting to enter illegally, and no longer to those who do not claim asylum at ports of entry. Other activities can be done.
“While we understand that many people are desperate to immigrate to the United States, our system needs to be orderly and secure, and that is my goal,” he said.
It was a significant shift that reflected how Harris’ campaign is trying to close the gap with former President Donald Trump on immigration by taking a tougher stance on border security.
